Patients, staff and volunteers at Laurel Hospice have come together to show through the power of art that love always wins.
Earlier this year, The Hospital Research Foundation Group – Creative Health art therapist Abbi Sulda and the volunteer Art Expression group joined forces to create a beautiful Zentagle mural.
During renovations at Laurel Hospice, the group came up with an idea to brighten up the partition of the site office through the addition of a mural that invites reflection and uplifts the mood of the common area.
On Valentine’s Day, Abbi invited patients, family and staff to reflect on what love is, and their responses were incorporated in the internal border of the mural.
Zentangle art is an easy-to-learn abstract drawing method which focuses on drawing patterns, called tangles, through a combination of simple strokes like dots, lines or curves.
The art form is said to have a relaxing effect due to the use of repetitive strokes and concentration, which helps to both calm and focus the mind.
It’s all about fun, meditation and creative expression and can be done by anyone regardless of age or skill level.
This project wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Art Expression volunteers Chrissie, Barb, Anne, Kym and Gio.
The quintet has more than 10 years’ experience between them, and you’ll find them all throughout Laurel Hospice weaving their rich tapestries of compassion, dedication and creativity.
Whether it’s Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, Christmas or Easter, you’ll find them crafting their unique creations.
Sometimes you’ll find them in the common room sharing laughter and connection, or personalising a patient’s room with art based on their unique character.
Laurel Hospice would truly not be the same place without their knowledge, energy and passion. We can’t thank them enough!
